Earth System Science & Environmental Engineering

Preamble
The Environmental Earth System Science (EESS) bachelor of science degree and Earth System Science and environmental Engineering (ESE) bachelor of engineering degree are unique new interdisciplinary degree programs at City College that unite faculty from the Grove School of Engineering and Division of Science. EESS/ESE draws from specialists in civil, electrical and chemical engineering and earth and atmospheric sciences, chemistry, physics and biology. The program is designed to create a knowledgeable workforce able to address environmental issues with an understanding of the applied engineering based solutions and a complete scientific understanding.

Our Mission

The Bachelor of Science degree (BS) in Environmental Earth System Science (EESS) and bachelor of engineering degree (BE) in Earth System Science and Environmental Engineering (ESE) are unique new interdisciplinary degree programs at CCNY that bring together faculty from the flagship programs at Grove School of Engineering and the Division of Science. EESS/ESE draws from scientific and engineering expertise in Civil, Electrical and Chemical engineering and Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, Chemistry and Biology. The EESS/ESE mission is to train a workforce of professionals who are equipped to handle large-scale environmental problems by bringing together a detailed scientific understanding of the environmental systems and their interactions as well as technological and engineering solutions needed to monitor the systems, evaluate the impact of natural and anthropogenic forces on these systems and devise strategies for restoration and remediation of such systems.

The mission of the Program of Earth System Science and Environmental Engineering at The City College of New York, in conformity with the mission of the School of Engineering, is:

    • To provide students with both a broad multidisciplinary education on interacting environmental systems and a targeted in-depth exposure to specialize and emerging areas.
    • To educate a diverse student body to carry out basic and applied research leading to new ideas, systems and solutions in the environmental engineering, earth systems science and related fields.
    • To offer advice, service, and support to industry, government agencies, schools, community groups and professional societies.
    • To insure that the above is carried out in appropriate and modern facilities that is conducive to learning.
