Research Experience for Undergraduates in Satellite and Ground-Based Remote Sensing at NOAA-CREST

Program Overview:

“Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU)” aims at increasing participation of undergraduate students in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) research by traditionally underrepresented groups, to promote research careers, to establish a community of scholars, and to provide students with an opportunity to pursue masters and doctoral graduate program in STEM. By primarily targeting students at CUNY’s twenty-three diversity rich colleges the proposed program will:
• Provide undergraduate students an opportunity to conduct full-time    collaborative research with a faculty mentor;
• Inspire enthusiasm for satellite and ground-based remote sensing through a weekly seminar series by faculty from within the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Cooperative Remote Sensing Science and Technology Center (NOAA-CREST) consortium;
• Encourage enrollment in graduate school through extensive student-faculty and student-student interaction and communication;
• Improve student communication skills through oral and written presentations of their research results;
• Recognize student achievement via an undergraduate summer research symposium for all REU students and via the support of REU students to present their research results at a national meeting;
• Encourage research careers through career development workshops and field trips to a national laboratory and to NOAA line offices; and
•Establish a community of scholars through a weekly journal club, research group meetings, and the attendance of social activities with undergraduates from City Tech’s Honors Scholars program, with CUNY Remote Sensing graduates, and with NOAA-CREST research faculty.
